Orange Bitters is loaded with vitamins and minerals. A member of the citrus family, it contains generous amounts of vitamin C; therefore, is good for the treatment of scurvy. It can be beneficial in cases of anemia when Vitamin C is needed to provide the acidic environment necessary for iron absorption. It also helps to clean the blood and has been reported to dissolve kidney stones. The Tikunas, (a Rainforest tribe), like to drink one-half cup of Orange Bitter leaf tea for stomach pains. Other digestive disorders that are treated with Orange Bitters include epigastric or abdominal pains, distention, indigestion, gas and constipation. It has laxative properties. Bitter orange has been used as a digestive tonic to help relieve nausea and soothe stomach disturbances such as indigestion, gas and bloating. Research has shown that it is effective in shrinking a distended stomach and lifting a prolapsed womb or rectum. It is an expectorant and laxative. It is considered to be one of the strongest chi moving herbs, with the power to help break up tumors."
Bitter Orange is a digestive tonic, helps to relieve nausea and soothe stomach disturbance.
In China, both the ripe and unripe fruit are used medicinally, although the unripe bitter orange (zhi shi) is more potent than ripe (zhi ke). The fruit stimulated the digestion, so can help constipation, move stagnant qi (energy), and make a cooling expectorant for coughs, especially where the phlegm is thick and yellow. It also calms the nerves, so is useful for insomnia and shock. Actions: carminative, digestive stimulant, nervine, increases blood pressure, diuretic, expectorant, energy tonic.
CAUTION: Use bitter orange with caution in pregnancy; it can cause contractions.
Are there any side effects or interactions with bitter orange?
Bitter orange oil may possibly cause light sensitivity (photosensitivity), especially in fair-skinned individuals. Generally this occurs only if the oil is applied directly to the skin and then exposed to bright light; in rare cases it has also been known to occur in people who have taken bitter orange internally. The oil should not be applied topically and anyone who uses it internally should avoid bright light, including tanning booths.
Internal use of the volatile oil of bitter orange is also potentially unsafe and should not be undertaken without expert guidance. Large amounts of orange peel have caused intestinal colic, convulsions, and death in children. The amounts recommended above for internal use should not be exceeded.
This concern is not raised in any other reference, and the American Herbal Products Association classifies the herb as "class 1," an herb that can be safely consumed during pregnancy when used appropriately.
Decoctions of bitter orange substantially increased blood levels of cyclosporine in pigs, causing toxicity. Bitter orange also inhibited human cytochrome P450 3A (CYP3A) in the test tube. This is an enzyme that helps the liver get rid of numerous toxins, and strongly affects metabolism of certain drugs. Bitter orange might, therefore, interact with drugs that are metabolized by CYP3A. To be on the safe side, bitter orange should not be combined with prescription medications, unless someone is under the care of an experienced natural medicine clinician.
At the time of writing, there were no well-known drug interactions with bitter orange. There has been some whom believe it is incompatible with high
blood pressure medications.. Precaution is advised.
Effects and Cautions

Testimonial June 2004: "I feel compelled to write a testimonial for the Bitter Orange extract. I have been suffering with breathing problems for about three months. What began as walking pneumonia ended with a severe case of bronchitis. My airways have been very tight and restricted. After one dose of Bitter Orange under my tongue, my airways opened up and my chronic cough was silenced, all within seconds. Also, my eleven year old daughter came home from school recently complaining of extreme nausea and stomach ache. I gave her 20 drops of Bitter Orange under her tongue and within 15 to 20 minutes she felt 100% better and was able to eat supper with no more complaints. In my opinion, Bitter Orange is very effective and also very tasty. I am so impressed and grateful that such products are available to one and all. Thank you Pure Herbs for such superior products." -- Angela Conrad, Newport, VT 1-802-334-1015
Testimonial June 28, 2004: “I’ve had an under-active thyroid for most of my life. I started taking Dulse Extract which helped a lot. I lost so much weight while taking Dulse along with exercising that people in my high school wouldn’t recognize me. But, even with taking the Dulse, there was still something missing. On June 8th, 2004, I was introduced to the herb, Bitter Orange. It worked like a miracle! Bitter Orange improved my circulation, energy, concentration and my allergies! All this coming from a person whose asthma was so bad that I had to use inhalers like Albuterol. My allergies were so bad I had to take prescription medications like Claritin and Clarinex. To be able to inhale in New Jersey, I used to use Nasonex and Nasocort. After about five or six days, my allergies were gone! It feels so good to breathe again. Bitter Orange also helps with painful constipation. It also gives you energy and it tastes good too! For all those people out there who have problems with circulation, allergies, tiredness, concentration or asthma give Bitter Orange Extract a try. You will not be sorry.-- S.S., Bound Brook, NJ
August 30, 2004 "I would like to express our gratitude for Bitter Orange. It is true - change can bring about the good. This herb comes to our family at a time when A.E.A.-B (with Ephedra) was not working with Spring pollens and congestion. Bitter Orange is doing just fine this Fall, and I have high expectations for the Spring of 2005. In addition, I believe it helped my daughter to heal after a nasty lower respiratory infection. Thank you as always, Dr. Watkins!" --The Twill Family, Summit, NJ
October 28, 2004 "I'm so impressed with your Bitter Orange. I have asthma and I have been having a lot of trouble with it over the past year. I have tried medications from my doctor, but I really didn't feel good about using them, so I tried your Ephedra before the government banned the sale of it. I found some relief, but not enough. I just recently decided to try the Bitter Orange. I used to walk three to four miles a week and my asthma had gotten so bad I couldn't get very far and I would have to go back home. The day I received the Bitter Orange I took 40 drops and when my son asked if I would go for a walk with him I thought well let’s see what's going to happen. Much to my surprise and his too, I walked the full three miles around our country block! I had no problem at all thanks to the Bitter Orange. I now carry it with me in my purse, just in case I forget to take it in the morning. The only time I have trouble breathing now when I walk is when I have forgotten to take the Bitter Orange so that is why I carry it with me. If I do forget to take my Bitter Orange as soon as I remember I will take 40 drops and wait five minutes and then I'm ready to go! Thanks for adding much improvement to my life. I can once again enjoy going for a walk which is something I was afraid I'd not be able to do again. God Bless You " --Michelle, Chesterfield, MI
